PROGRAMME  FOR  THE  YEAR  2016

All meetings are held on the third Thursday of the month at Pill Memorial Club
in the downstairs Main Hall commencing 7.30 pm.


 17th March ~ Annual General Meeting

Followed by ‘Pill Past and Present’ with slides from the Ricky Byles Collection and presented by Ivor King and Maggi Stowers.


21st April  ~ The Story of Portishead Lifeboat Service Volunteer crewman,

Dave Herbert, will tell us about the service from the 1960s to the present, including the new lifeboat station at Portishead Marina.

19th May  ~ A Field in Easton-in-Gordano

Society member, Jack Payne, has been a metal detectorist for many years and will talk about his local archaeological finds and show slides of the objects he has found.


 Tuesday 21st  June  ~ VISIT to Stanway House, near Cheltenham

We first take the coach to Cheltenham Race Course Railway Station where we board the Gloucestershire & Warwickshire steam train for a 12 mile journey to Toddington. Here we are able to have lunch before travelling to Stanway House and Garden, a Jacobean manor near Cheltenham.

 15th September ~ The History of Portbury Village

Alan Vowles, Secretary of Portbury History Society and author of “Portbury – twinned with apathy”, will delve back in time to tell of the fascinating story of this historically important village.

20th October  ~ The History of Easton Mill

Mike Taylor of the Bristol Industrial Archeological Society will tell of his discovery of this long-forgotten industrial site. His talk will be illustrated with location map and pictures of the old mill.


 17th November ~ Movie Musical Magic

Terry Merrett Smith returns to our Society as we so enjoyed his talk on Dance Bands last winter. This time he will take us on a journey through some of the old musical movies of yesteryear.
